JCM 315, Advanced News Writing was a course to help students practice hard news writing. Each student was assigned a beat at the beginning of the semester. I was assigned the local government beat. We were required to submit six different stories on our beat throughout the semester, and could fashion them in any way we liked (hard news, feature story, profile, etc.) We were graded for AP Style, accurate reporting, and strong writing. We had to have a minimum of three sources (either people or documents) per story.
