TUSCALOOSA— Former U.S Senator and Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum spoke to over a hundred UA students on Oct. 9 about religious freedom and political division.

Rick Santorum, a former U.S Senator from Pennsylvania and a 2016 Republican presidential candidate spoke in ten Hoor on a topic that related to him as a Catholic politician. The event entitled “God is a Microagression: The Left’s Attack on Religious Freedom” brought  out a crowd of over a hundred students and faculty. “To those who are not religious, the idea of freedom of religion is something that is more observed than it is lived,” Santorum said. “People who try to live their devout faith don’t just have a relationship with God. It begins there, but religion affects everything you do in your life. They say ‘you can go to church if you want to but don’t even try to speak of it around me because it offends me.’” Santorum said. He continued to discuss religious freedom and the ways that it is a necessity in a free country and then he opened the floor up to questions. One question, asking Santorum’s opinion of sodomy, brought a fit of giggles over the entire crowd but he answered the question saying that he believes people’s personal freedom’s shouldn’t be dictated by the government.

“Overall I think we had a great turnout and we were able to bring new ideas onto campus, because we don’t get a lot of conservative speakers. It was really great to have a U.S Senator on campus to speak and answer questions in a productive way,” Katie Carroll, the Secretary of Young Americans for Freedom and organizer of the event said. Young Americans for Freedom holds meetings every Tuesday at 8 p.m. in the Ferguson Student Center room 3104.
